Abi Gezint Newsletter- Spring 2008      

Greetings to all our members of the Abi Gezint club and all those dedicated to perpetuating“mama lochen” our cherished language. Our purpose is to enjoy each others heritage, company, and the joy of speaking and hearing our mother tongue.

We meet two times a month at the Jewish Community Center, located in The Galleria shopping center on Route 9 in Manalapan (732) 683-9300. You will be notified by mail as to the dates.

You need not be totally fluent in Yiddish to participate. We are all here to help one another.

Bring with you if you can, articles of interest, Israel, entertainment, etc. relating to Jewish background, which will be discussed with enjoyment by us all, and jokes. Nothing is funnier than humor with a Yiddish punch line, or more enjoyable than when an anecdote depicts us as being wise; to wit….

A story is told of a Jewish man who was riding on the subway reading an Arab newspaper. A friend of his, who happened to be riding in the same subway car, noticed this strange phenomenon. Very upset, he approached the newspaper reader: “Moishe, have you lost your mind? Why are you reading an Arab newspaper? But what did I find? Jews being persecuted, Israel being attacked, Jews disappearing through assimilation and intermarriage, Jews living in poverty, etc. So, I switched to the Arab newspaper. “Now what do I find? Jews own all the banks, Jews control the media, Jews are all rich and powerful, Jews rule the world. The news is so much better!!!”…….get the idea

Es iz nit geshtoigen un nit gefloigen- It never happened! It doesn’t make sense! (Lit., It was never standing and never flying.

 

HESTER STREET- The few blocks of Hester Street on either side of Ludlow was called the Khazermark, or Pig Market, even though pig was about the only thing not on sale there. The name derived from European pig markets, crowded, noisy places where swine were sold and slaughtered. On Hester Street, the noise came from the press of humanity that jammed the neighborhood to buy from stalls and the ubiquitous, traffic-blocking pushcarts. Thursday night and Friday morning are bargain days in the Pig Market……There is scarcely anything else (other than a pig) that can be hawked from a wagon that is not to be found, and at ridiculously low prices. Bandanas and tin cups at two cents, peaches at a cent a quart, ‘damaged’ eggs for a song, hats for a quarter, and spectacles for 35 cents;  frowsy-looking chickens and half-plucked geese, hung by the neck are the staple of the market. Even human beings- the unemployed looking for day labor- were for sale on Hester Street.
